Mardan (English spelling)

Japanese: マルダーン（英語表記）Mardān

A city in the central part of the North-West Frontier Province in northern Pakistan. Population 167,000 (1981). Located on the Yousufzai Plain in the Kabul River basin, it occupies a key location on the transportation route from the plain to northern mountain areas such as Swat and Chitral. The surrounding area is a fertile agricultural region irrigated by the Upper Swat Irrigation Canal, and produces a large amount of sugarcane, tobacco, rice, and wheat. As well as distributing these crops, various industries such as sugar refining and tobacco are located in the city. A fort was built by the British in 1854 after the Sikh War, and during the British colonial period it became one of the military bases in the North-West Frontier Province.

パキスタン北部，北西辺境州中部の都市。人口16万7000(1981)。カーブル川流域のユースフザイ平野にあり，同平野からスワート，チトラールなどの北方山岳地帯に至る交通路の要地を占める。周辺は上スワート用水路に灌漑される肥沃な農業地帯で，サトウキビ，タバコ，米，小麦などの産が多い。それらを集散するとともに，精糖，タバコなどの諸工業が立地する。シク戦争後の1854年にイギリスにより要塞が築かれ，英領時代には北西辺境州における軍事拠点の一つとなった。
