An area that is no longer subject to mountain-building and is a relatively stable part of the crust. It refers to Kober's kratogen, and cratons are divided into land masses (hochkraton) in continental regions and ocean masses (tiefkraton) in oceanic regions [Kober: 1923, Stille: 1936, Kimura et al.: 1973]. Due to the recent idea of ocean floor spreading, cratons are limited to continental regions [Aubouin: 1965]. The Greek word kratos means strength or intensity.
