Ethno‐choreology

Japanese: 民族舞踊学 - みんぞくぶようがく（英語表記）ethno‐choreology

Generally, it is considered to be an academic field that studies all dances other than dance as Western performing arts such as ballet and modern dance. However, since there is no established academic field equivalent to musicology, which studies Western art music, the emphasis is on methodology rather than the genres or regions it deals with. Descriptions of dance can be found in Plato and Aristotle, and it is clear that research on dance has been conducted since ancient Greece. However, ethnodance studies became popular after the 1960s. Since there are few universities and research institutions that conduct dance research, many researchers have backgrounds in ethnomusicology, anthropology, theater studies, physical education, Japanese studies, Asian studies, etc., and their methodologies are often based on those of their respective academic fields.

一般にバレエやモダン･ダンスなどの西洋の舞台芸術としての舞踊以外のすべての舞踊を研究する学問とされる。しかし，西洋の芸術音楽の研究を行う音楽学にあたる学問が確立していないので，取り扱うジャンルや地域よりはむしろ方法論に重点が置かれる。　舞踊に関する記述はプラトンやアリストテレスにみられ，古代ギリシア時代から研究は行われてきたことがわかる。しかし，民族舞踊学は1960年代以後盛んになった。舞踊研究を行っている大学や研究機関が少ないので，研究者は民族音楽学，人類学，演劇学，体育学，日本学，アジア研究などの出身者が多く，方法論はそれぞれの出身の学問のそれに基づいている場合が多い。
