It is a country of Micronesian origin that separated from the Polynesian Ellice Islands (now Tuvalu) and is part of the former Gilbert Islands, formerly the Gilbert and Ellice Islands. The islands were discovered in part by the Spanish navigator Pedro Fernandez de Quiros in 1606, surveyed by Captain Gilbert of the British Navy in 1788, and came under British rule from 1892. …
