A former town in Higashiasai district, northeastern Shiga prefecture. It occupies the mouth of the Anegawa River and overlooks Lake Biwa. Rice is the main crop, but wheat and soybeans are also produced. Velvet and crepe weaving are local industries. Fishing is also practiced near the mouth of the Anegawa River. Chikubu Island on the lake belongs to this town. In 1993, Lake Biwa was registered as a Ramsar Convention wetland. 滋賀県北東部,東浅井(ひがしあざい)郡の旧町。姉川の河口部を占め,琵琶湖にのぞむ。米作を主とするが,麦,大豆なども産する。ビロード,ちりめん織の地場産業がある。姉川の河口付近では漁業も行われる。湖上の竹生(ちくぶ)島はこの町に属する。1993年に琵琶湖がラムサール条約登録湿地となる。2006年2月東浅井郡浅井町と長浜市へ編入。16.98km2。7870人(2003)。
