Chronicles - Nendaiiki

A translation of the word "chronicle" or "annals," this refers to a chronological historical account. It is characterized by the fact that it is entirely, or at least partially, devoted to contemporary accounts. This is because the original form of annals was to record events simultaneously. In ancient Rome, we can see masterpieces such as Tacitus' Annals, but it was in the Middle Ages that numerous annals were produced and they became the representative form of historical writing.

In the Middle Ages, while being strongly aware of the ancient historical texts as models, chronicles were written that had a perspective on human history and universal history based on Christian, especially Augustinian, views of history. Gregory of Tours's Historia du Frankensei (6th century) describes events from the creation of the world to his own time, i.e., "near the end of the world." History is considered to be a process in which providence is manifested directly through miracles and indirectly through human affairs. The same can be said for the Venerable Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the Angles (7th century) and Paulus the Diaconus' Historia du Lombardi (8th century). As time went on, the contents became more detailed and took on an encyclopedic color. Otto von Freising's Annals of Two Kingdoms (12th century) can be said to be a representative work of the mid-Middle Ages. Since universal history was the standard for historical writing throughout the Middle Ages, this line can be traced back to Bossuet's Histoire du mundi (17th century).

Bishops and monasteries recorded a small range of events. The simplest of these were records of peripheral events and hearsay written in the margins of the Breviary. On the other hand, works such as the Chronicles of Saint-Bertin and the Chronicles of Fulda went beyond being local records and took on the character of official records of the Carolingian Empire.

The history of the dynasty began in the form of biographies or reign records, such as Einhard's Life of Charlemagne and Nitard's Life of Charles the Bald, and eventually gave rise to masterpieces such as Suger's Life of Louis VI and History of Louis VII (12th century) and Guillaume de Nangis' Records of the Deeds of Philip III (13th century).

Once the royal power had a certain degree of national foundation, chronicles were written tracing the origins of dynasties and peoples. Examples include the Anglo-Saxon Annals (10th century) and Geoffrey of Monmouth's Historia Bretona (12th century). The annals of the Abbey of Saint-Denis also served as records of the Capetian dynasty, and were the basis for the Chronicles Grandes Français (13th century), which continued to be expanded until the 14th century.

As the level of knowledge improved, memoir-like chronicles appeared, written by ordinary people. These include Joinville's Les saintes Louis (13th century) and, above all, Froissart's Annales (14th-15th century), which portrayed society during the Hundred Years' War. These are written from the perspective of the knights, but on the other hand, there was a group of civil chronicles. The 14th century was the golden age of Florentine chronicles, producing works such as Compagni's Annales and Villani's Annales Nova. These chronicles are treated as historical sources today and are included in various collections of historical materials, notably the German Monumenta Germaniae Historica. クロニクルchronicleないしアナルズannalsの訳語で、編年体の歴史記述をさす。全部、あるいは少なくとも一部が同時代の記述にあてられている点に特徴がある。同時並行的に事件を記録するのが年代記の原型だったからである。古代ローマにおいて、たとえばタキトゥスの『年代記』のような名作をみるが、おびただしい年代記がつくられて史書の代表的な型式となったのは、中世である。

　中世には、古代史書を典範として強く意識する一方、同時にキリスト教的、とくにアウグスティヌス的史観に立脚した、人類史的、普遍史的展望をもつ年代記が書かれた。トゥールのグレゴリウス『フランク人史』（6世紀）は、天地創造から同時代、すなわち「世の終末に近きころ」まで年を追って事件を記述している。歴史は、直接には奇跡によって、間接には人事を通じて、摂理が発現する過程とされている。尊師ベーダ（ビード）『アングル人の教会的歴史』（7世紀）、パウルス・ディアコヌス『ランゴバルド人の歴史』（8世紀）なども同様である。時代が下るにつれて、しだいに内容が精密化し百科全書風の色彩を帯びる。オットー・フォン・フライジング『二つの国の年代記』（12世紀）は、中世中期を代表する作品といってよい。普遍史は中世を通じて歴史記述の基準であったので、この系列はボシュエ『世界史』（17世紀）までたどることができる。

　司教座や僧院では、小範囲の事件が記録されていた。そのもっとも素朴なものは、聖務日暦の余白に周辺の事件や伝聞を記入するものであった。他方、『サン・ベルタン修道院年代記』『フルダ修道院年代記』などは、一地域の記録を越えて、カロリング帝国の公式記録としての性格をも帯びている。

　王朝の歴史はアインハルト『カール大帝伝』、ニタール『シャルル禿頭(とくとう)王伝』など、伝記体ないし治世録の形で出発し、やがてシュジェSuger『ルイ6世伝』『ルイ7世史』（12世紀）やギヨーム・ド・ナンジ『フィリップ3世事績録』（13世紀）などの名作を生むに至る。

　王権がある程度の国民的基盤をもつようになると、王朝と民族の起源を跡づける年代記が書かれる。『アングロサクソン年代記』（10世紀）、ジェフリ・オブ・モンマスGeoffrey of Monmouth『ブルトン人史』（12世紀）はその一例である。サン・ドニ修道院の年代記はカペー王家の記録を兼ねたが、これをもとに『フランス大年代記』（13世紀）が成立し、14世紀まで加筆が続けられた。

　知的水準の向上に伴い、俗人の筆になる回想録風の年代記が登場する。ジョアンビル『ルイ聖王言行録』（13世紀）、そしてなによりも百年戦争期の社会を活写したフロアサール『年代記』（14世紀～15世紀）などがそれである。これらは騎士的立場から記述されているが、他方には一群の市民的年代記がある。14世紀はフィレンツェ年代記の黄金時代で、コンパーニDino Compagni『年代記』やビラーニGiovanni Villani『新年代記』などを生んだ。これらの年代記は今日、史料として扱われ、各国の史料集成、なかんずくドイツの『モヌメンタ・ゲルマニアエ・ヒストリカ』に収録されている。なお、中国の年代記については「編年体」の項を参照されたい。
