Uwamizuzakura - Uwamizuzakura

Japanese: ウワミズザクラ - うわみずざくら
Uwamizuzakura - Uwamizuzakura

A deciduous tall tree of the Rosaceae family (APG classification: Rosaceae). It grows to a height of 10-20 meters. The leaves are alternate and oblong. They are 6-10 cm long, with a pointed tip and a rounded base, and have sharp sawtooth edges. They flower in April-May after the leaves open. They are 10-20 cm long racemes containing numerous white flowers, 6-10 mm in diameter. They have five petals, stamens longer than the petals, and several leaves on the axis of the inflorescence. The fruit is oval with a slightly pointed tip, and ripens yellow-red to black-purple in July-August. It grows wild in southwestern Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu, and is also distributed in China. The wood is very sticky, and is used for tool handles and utensils, and the bark and roots are used for dyes. In the Niigata Prefecture area, the flower buds and green fruits are pickled in salt and eaten as anningo, a dish known as anningo. The Hahaka tree (Kojiki), which was used to tell fortunes by roasting deer shoulder bones, is Uwamizuzakura. The closely related species, Shiurizakura, grows wild in central and northern Honshu and Hokkaido, as well as in the southern Kuril Islands, Ussuri, and Sakhalin. The base of the leaves is heart-shaped.
