Rad

A unit of absorbed dose. It is expressed in rad (radiation absorbed dose). When 1 gram of a material absorbs 100 erg of energy through irradiation, the absorbed dose of that material is said to be 1 rad. 1 rad is roughly equal to the dose absorbed by various materials for an exposure dose of 1 R (roentgen) of X-rays or gamma rays. For example, water absorbs 98 erg of energy per R. In other words, the absorbed dose is 0.98 rad. On the other hand, it is known that air has an absorbed dose of 0.87 rad per R. The relationship with gray (Gy), the unit of absorbed dose in the International System of Units (SI units), is as follows:

1 rad = ^10-2 Gy.

吸収線量の単位．rad(radiation absorbed dose)で表す．放射線の照射によって物質1 g が100 erg のエネルギーを吸収したとき，その物質の吸収線量は1 rad であるという．1 rad は1 R(レントゲン)のX線やγ線の照射線量に対して種々な物質が吸収する線量にほぼ等しい．たとえば，水は1 R に対し98 erg のエネルギーを吸収する．すなわち，吸収線量は0.98 rad である．一方，空気は1 R に対し0.87 rad の吸収線量になることが知られている．国際単位系(SI単位)の吸収線量の単位であるグレイ(Gy)との関係は

1 rad ＝ 10^－2 Gy．
