Ironwood (English name)

Japanese: タシロマメ（英語表記）ironwood

An evergreen tree of the legume family that can reach a height of 30m. The flowers are not butterfly-shaped but rose-like, and belong to the subfamily Caesalpinioideae. Its Japanese name is Tashiro Mame, commemorating Tashiro Yasusada, a pioneer in Okinawa and Taiwanese botanical research. The leaves are pinnately compound, alternate, and have four leaflets. The leaflets are elliptical, leathery, 5-10cm long, and glabrous. In August, panicles are produced at the ends of the branches, and many flowers are produced. Only one petal is developed, about 1cm long, white or pale pink, and has three stamens. The fruits are large, flattened, oblong, 20-25cm long, 5-7cm wide, leathery, and glabrous.

高さ30mに達するマメ科の常緑高木。花は蝶形とならずバラに似た形で，ジャケツイバラ亜科に属する。和名は田代豆で，沖縄･台湾植物研究の先駆者であった田代安定を記念したもの。葉は羽状複葉で，互生し，4枚の小葉がある。小葉は楕円形，革質で長さ5～10cm，無毛。8月に枝先に円錐花序をつくり，多数花がつく。花弁は1枚だけが発達し，長さ約1cm，白色または淡紅色，おしべは3本。果実は大型で扁平，長楕円形，長さ20～25cm，幅5～7cm，革質で無毛。
