1804‐73 A political leader during the Italian Risorgimento period. He gained fame in his twenties by publishing many patriotic historical novels. He also had connections with the Young Italian movement led by Mazzini. In 1848-49 he became one of the leaders of the revolutionary movement in Tuscany, and in March 1849 he was elected dictatorial consul of the Tuscan Provisional Government. After the defeat of the revolution he initially refused to seek asylum and was sentenced to 15 years in prison, but later fled to Corsica and the Kingdom of Sardinia.
