Zomba (English spelling)

A city in southern Malawi. It is located 884m above sea level on the Zomba Plateau, east of the Shire River. It was founded in 1885 along a slave-hunting route, and became the administrative seat of the British Central Africa Protectorate (later Nyasaland) in 1900. It was the capital of Malawi until the end of 1974. It is a resort town blessed with beautiful scenery and a pleasant climate even in summer. However, its commercial center is Blantyre, 60km southwest, and its agricultural center is Lilongwe, which moved to the capital in 1975. It is now a distribution center for agricultural products such as tobacco and rice. It is home to the University of Malawi, and a branch line of the main railway line from the port of Beira in Mozambique to Salima runs through it. Population 42,878 (1987).

マラウイ南部の都市。シーレ川東方，ゾンバ高原の標高 884mの高地に位置。 1885年に奴隷狩りのルートに沿って建設され，1900年イギリス中部アフリカ保護領 (のちのニアサランド) の行政庁所在地となり，74年末までマラウイの首都であった。美しい風光と夏でも快適な気候に恵まれた保養地。しかし商業中心地は南西 60kmのブランタイア，農業中心地は 75年に遷都した首都リロングウェに譲っている。現在はタバコ，米など農産物集散地。マラウイ大学があり，モザンビークのベイラ港からサリマへいたる幹線鉄道の支線が通じる。人口4万 2878 (1987) 。
