A printing plate in which the shades of a photograph are represented by large and small halftone dots, or a print produced with this. It was invented (patented in 1882) by Georg Meisenbach (1841-1912) of Germany. When representing a photograph with shades of light and dark on a printing plate, it is not possible to apply ink to the plate with differences in shade in some areas, so dark areas are printed with large halftone dots and lighter areas with small dots. The dots are so small that they cannot be seen individually with the naked eye, so there are differences in shade throughout the photograph. These dots were created by passing the original photograph through a screen when it was photographed with a platemaking camera. Today, digital data is rendered with a laser. The fineness of the dots is represented by the number of rows of dots arranged in a regular line across a width of 1 inch (about 2.54 centimeters) (line frequency). The higher the line frequency, the finer the dots. Halftone screens for newspapers are around 80 lines per page, halftone screens for high-quality paper are 100 or 133 lines per page, and halftone screens for coated or art paper are 175 lines per page or more.
