[用法]老人・としより――「老人」は、文章やあらたまった話の中では最も一般的に使われる語。特に「老人福祉」「老人ホーム」のように複合語を作る場合、「年寄り」は使わないのが普通。◇「年寄り」は「老人」よりややくだけた親しみのある感じで使われる。前後関係によって軽蔑の感じが強く出ることもある。「お年寄りを大切にしよう」「年寄りの冷や水」など。◇類似の語に「老体」がある。「老体」は「御老体を煩わせてすみません」というような形で尊敬をこめて言う場合にも用いる。◇年齢が高いことを示す「高齢者」が広く使われるようになっている。◇「老人」が個人を指す場合は男であることが多い。女性については「老婦人」「老女」「老婆」などを用いることが多い。「年寄り」「老体」にはこのような使い分けはない。
