King of Sweden. Reigned 1907-50. Parliamentary democracy was perfected during his reign, but he clashed with parliament, stating that "the monarchy takes precedence over political parties." He also confronted the cabinet over defense issues before World War I, forcing them to resign. In 1920, he established Sweden's first independent Social Democrat government to solve the country's unemployment problem. He was heavily involved in politics. In diplomacy, he hosted the Three Kings Conference in 1914, calling for cooperation between the three Nordic countries. On the other hand, he was popular for his wide contact with the people. スウェーデン王。在位1907‐50年。治世下に議会民主主義が完成したが，〈王権は政党に優先する〉と述べて議会と対立し，第1次大戦前に防衛問題で内閣と対決して総辞職に追いこみ，20年には失業問題解決のため同国初の社会民主労働党単独政権を誕生させるなど，強く政治に関与した。外交では14年に北欧三国の協調を訴えて三国王会議を主催した。その反面，国民と広く接し人気を博した。【清原瑞彦】
