...A sturdy perennial plant of the Urticaceae family that grows in the low mountains and on roadsides on the plains of western Japan (illustration). It is a highly reproductive, weedy plant. It grows to a height of 1-1.7m. Many stems grow from a single plant, are densely hairy, and are sturdy. The leaves are opposite, oval, and 5-15cm long. The leaf edges have coarse double serrations, and the undersides are covered with soft, dense hairs. It usually only produces female flowers, and has the unusual property of producing seeds without pollination. This property is called apomixis. The female flowers have two tepals, about 1mm long, that are fused together and encase the ovary. ...
