Okazaki

The area is located in the southeastern part of Kyoto City, north of Sanjo-dori and east of Higashioji-dori. It is included in Sakyo Ward. At the end of the Heian period, the area was lined with the temple buildings of Rokusho-ji Temple, including the In-gosho Palace built by Emperor Shirakawa, but they were later burned down by war and there were few houses in the area. In 1895 (Meiji 28), Heian Shrine was built in imitation of the Daidairi of Heian-kyo to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of the transfer of the capital to Heian. In 1904, the site of the National Industrial Exposition became Okazaki Park. Currently, the area is home to the Kyoto Prefectural Library, the Municipal Museum of Art, the National Museum of Modern Art, the Municipal Zoo, the Kyoto City Industrial Promotion Hall (Miyako Messe), the Kyoto Traditional Industry Communication Center, and the Kyoto Kaikan, making it a cultural center for the citizens of Kyoto.

京都市南東部、三条通以北、東大路通以東一帯の地。左京区に含まれる。平安末期には白河(しらかわ)法皇の造営になる院御所をはじめ、法勝寺(ほっしょうじ)など六勝寺(ろくしょうじ)の伽藍(がらん)が立ち並んでいたが、のち兵火によって焼失し、人家もまれであった。1895年（明治28）平安遷都1100年を記念して、平安京大内裏(だいだいり)を模して平安神宮が創建された。また1904年には内国勧業博覧会の会場跡地が岡崎公園となった。現在、府立図書館、市立美術館、国立近代美術館、市立動物園、京都市勧業館（みやこめっせ）、京都伝統産業ふれあい館、京都会館などがあり、京都市民の文化センターとなっている。
