Prince Yoshihisa

Imperial family and military man during the late Edo and Meiji periods. The ninth son of Prince Fushiminomiya Kuniie, his mother was the daughter of Takatsukasa Masahiro, and his birth mother was Horiuchi Nobuko. After working at Shoren-in and Kajii Monzeki, he was given the name Noku by the Imperial Prince in October 1858 (Ansei 5), and was ordained as Kogen. In May 1867 (Keio 3), he inherited the position of Rinnoji Monzeki. After the Battle of Toba-Fushimi, he went to Sunpu Castle to petition Prince Taruhito, the commander-in-chief of the Eastern Expedition, to free Tokugawa Yoshinobu, who was under house arrest at Kan'ei-ji Temple. He was then supported by the Shogitai and barricaded himself in Kan'ei-ji Temple, but escaped to Aizu under attack by the new government forces, and became the leader of the Oshu-Uetsu Reppan Dōmei. In September 1868 (Meiji 1), Oshu was pacified, and he submitted a letter of apology. He was suspended as an Imperial Prince and placed under house arrest. In October of the following year, he was pardoned and returned to the Fushiminomiya position. In the same year, he succeeded Prince Kitashirakawa. Prior to this, in December of the year 3, he studied military science in Germany. After returning to Japan in 1910, he was promoted to lieutenant colonel and then major lieutenant general, and in the year 1928, he became commander of the Imperial Guard Division. In March of the same year, anti-Japanese soldiers rose up in Taiwan, and he died of illness in Tainan while working to suppress the rebellion.

幕末明治期の皇族,軍人。伏見宮邦家親王の第9子,母は鷹司政煕の娘,生母は堀内信子。青蓮院,梶井門跡を経て,安政5(1858)年10月親王宣下により能久の名を受け,得度して公現と称した。慶応3(1867)年5月輪王寺門跡を相続。鳥羽・伏見の戦ののち寛永寺で謹慎していた徳川慶喜を救解すべく,駿府城に赴いて東征大総督熾仁親王に嘆願。その後彰義隊に擁され寛永寺に立てこもったが,新政府軍の攻撃を受け会津に脱走,奥羽越列藩同盟の盟主となる。明治1(1868)年9月奥州が鎮定され,謝罪状を提出。親王停止・謹慎処分となる。翌年10月赦免,伏見宮に復す。同5年北白川宮を相続。これに先立つ3年12月より兵学研究のためドイツに留学。10年に帰国したのち,陸軍中佐,少中将と昇進,同28年近衛師団長。同年3月台湾で抗日の兵が挙がり,その鎮圧に当たるなか台南にて病没。
