Dutch Trading Company

...When sugarcane, indigo, and other crops needed to be processed into products, this was done in government-run factories or private factories (owned by Europeans or Chinese) under contract with the government, but otherwise everything from planting to manufacturing and delivery to government warehouses was done by the local residents. Transportation and sales to the world market were entrusted to the Dutch Trading Company. Instructions on the type and quantity of crops, selection of land, mobilization of labor, and so on were passed on by European officials to the native chiefs and then to the village chiefs, and cultivation was managed on a village-by-village basis.
