Nanpaku Eto - Nanpaku Eto

...A politician of the early Meiji period. A samurai of the Saga domain. Born in Hachinohe Village, Saga County. His given name was Taneo, and he also went by the pen name Nanshiro or Shiranan. In 1862 (Bunkyu 2), he escaped from the domain and participated in the Sonno Joi movement, and was sentenced to lifelong house arrest by the domain office. In 1867 (Keio 3), he was pardoned and became a censor, and in 1868 (Meiji 1), with the establishment of the Meiji government, he entered service as a conscripted officer. He became a military inspector of the Tosei Daitokufu (Great Chief Government of the Eastern Expedition), and was in charge of administration as a judge of the Edo garrison immediately after the surrender of Edo Castle. He subsequently served as a judge of the Tokyo prefectural government, a deputy chief counselor of the Saga domain, and an official in the System Bureau, before becoming the Minister of Education and Vice-Chairman of the House of Representatives in 1871, and Minister of Justice in 1872. ...

…明治初年の政治家。佐賀藩士。佐賀郡八戸村に生まれる。名は胤雄，南白または白南と号する。1862年(文久2)脱藩して尊攘運動に参加し，藩庁より永蟄居に処せられる。67年(慶応3)許されて監察となり，明治政府の成立とともに68年(明治1)徴士として出仕。東征大総督府軍監となり，江戸鎮台判事として江戸開城直後の施政を担当。その後，会計官判事，東京府判事，佐賀藩権大参事，制度局御用掛を歴任して71年文部大輔，左院副議長をつとめ，72年司法卿となる。…
