A marine fish of the filefish family in the order Tetraodontiformes (illustration). It is widely distributed in the waters south of central Honshu and in the southern waters. The body is significantly compressed laterally, with a small mouth at the tip of the protruding snout. The skin is tough, and the scales are small and have minute spines, giving the surface of the body a villiform appearance. The local names, such as hage in the Seto Inland Sea region and kawamuki in Fukuoka, and the standard Japanese name, kawahagi, are all given to this fish because the tough skin is peeled off and used for eating. The first dorsal and pelvic fins have degenerated, leaving only a single spine each. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
