...There are many methods for inducing ovulation, including the cyclic administration of estrogen and progesterone, and the temporary administration of large amounts of estrogen. Methods using ovarian steroid hormones have been around for a long time, and are still used today, but are becoming less common. The most widely used ovulation-inducing drug today is a nonsteroidal anti-estrogen, such as clomiphene citrate (brand name Clomid), which is taken orally for 5 to 10 days. Clomiphene binds to estrogen receptors at the hypothalamus and pituitary gland level, which triggers the release of a large amount of gonadotropins from the anterior pituitary gland around the 12th day after starting to take the drug, which is thought to cause ovulation. ...
