This is one of the so-called new Shinkansen lines (nationwide Shinkansen railway network). The plan for the new Shinkansen line is roughly divided into the Nagasaki Route, which runs from Hakata to Nagasaki, and the Kagoshima Route, which runs from Hakata south to Kagoshima. Construction of the Kagoshima Route began in September 1991 for a section, and in 2001 for the entire route. It was originally built as a new line with Shinkansen railway standards (so-called super express), but was changed to a standard gauge new line (so-called full standard) in 2000. Construction began first on the 127.6 km section between Shin-Yatsushiro and Kagoshima-Chuo, which was delayed from the original plan due to the difficulty of tunnel excavation in the soft Shirasu plateau, but it was partially opened in March 2004 as a six-car 800 series Tsubame train (operated by Kyushu Railway Company). The maximum speed is 260 km per hour, and the fastest train covers the same section in 34 minutes. As a result, the parallel Kagoshima Main Line between Yatsushiro and Kawauchi was separated from JR Kyushu and became a third-sector company called Hisatsu Orange Railway. The Kagoshima route was fully opened on March 12, 2011. It connected to the Sanyo Shinkansen, connecting Shin-Osaka and Kagoshima-Chuo by Shinkansen.
