Swedish film director. A master of the silent film era, known for his masterpiece The Immortality of the Soul (1921), which impressed the world with the mysticism of Nordic cinema. He started out as a stage actor before moving into the film world, and as both actor and director he released films such as The Day of the Dead (1917), The Life and Death of a Lover (1918), and The Immortality of the Soul (refilmed in France in 1939 by director Julien Duvivier under the title The Phantom Coach), which made the most of the double exposure effect. In 1923, he was invited to Hollywood, where he made such "masterpieces of the final silent era" as "The Scarlet Letter" (1925), starring Lillian Gish, who had been the heroine of Griffith's films, and "The Wind" (1928). In particular, "The Wind" is described in Georges Sadoul's History of World Cinema as a realistic masterpiece in which "even though it is a silent film, you can almost hear the roar of the wind and the sound of sand blowing against the glass window."

スウェーデンの映画監督。〈北欧映画の神秘主義〉を世界に印象づけた名作《霊魂の不滅》(1921)によって知られるサイレント時代の巨匠。舞台俳優から映画界入りし，俳優兼監督として《波高き日》(1917)，《生恋死恋》(1918)，そしてとくに二重露出の映像効果を最大限に生かした《霊魂の不滅》(1939年にフランスでジュリアン･デュビビエ監督により《幻の馬車》の題で再映画化)等々を発表。1923年，ハリウッドに招かれて，グリフィス監督の映画のヒロインだったリリアン･ギッシュ主演の《真紅の文字》(1925)，《風》(1928)など〈サイレント末期の傑作〉を撮り，なかでも《風》は〈サイレント映画であるにもかかわらず，突風のうなり，ガラス窓に吹きつけられる砂の音が聞こえるような気がする〉迫真の名作としてジョルジュ･サドゥールの《世界映画史》に記されている。
