Yokohama Line - Yokohama

The name of the track of East Japan Railway Company. 42.6 km between Higashi-Kanagawa (Kanagawa Prefecture) and Hachioji (Tokyo). In March 1988 (Showa 63), the Hachioji-Aihara section was double-tracked, completing the entire line. The entire line is DC electrified. It was opened in 1908 (Meiji 41) by Yokohama Railway to directly connect the textile town of Hachioji to the trading port of Yokohama. In 1910, the Railway Bureau leased it and took over operations, and in 1917 (Taisho 6), it was nationalized and became the Yokohama Line. In 1932 (Showa 7), the Higashi-Kanagawa-Haramachida (now Machida) section was electrified, and in 1941, the entire line was electrified. After World War II, the wave of residential development spread along the line, causing a remarkable population increase in cities such as the northern part of Yokohama, Machida, and Sagamihara. In response to the growing demand for transportation, double-tracking and an increase in the number of trains were implemented. In 1987, following the privatization of the Japanese National Railways, the line became part of the East Japan Railway Company. Many of the trains run directly to the Negishi Line via Yokohama, and rapid trains are also in operation.

東日本旅客鉄道の線路名称。東神奈川（神奈川県）―八王子（東京都）間、42.6キロメートル。1988年（昭和63）3月八王子―相原(あいはら)間が複線化され、全線複線化が完成した。全線直流電化。織物の町八王子を貿易港横浜に直結する目的で、横浜鉄道により1908年（明治41）開業、1910年より鉄道院が借り入れて営業を引き継ぎ、1917年（大正6）国有化されて横浜線となった。1932年（昭和7）東神奈川―原町田(はらまちだ)（現、町田）間を電化したのち、1941年に全線電化を完成した。第二次世界大戦後、住宅化の波が沿線に及んで横浜市北部や町田、相模原(さがみはら)などの都市の人口増加が著しく、輸送需要の増大に応じて複線化と列車の増発が進んだ。1987年、日本国有鉄道の分割民営化に伴い、東日本旅客鉄道に所属。列車の多くは横浜を経て根岸線へ直通運転されており、快速電車も運行されている。
