The synonym alcaicería (Spanish for raw silk market) is often used, because the largest commodity handled by the Chinese in Parian was Chinese raw silk. The Spaniards called the Chinese in the Philippines Sangley or Xanglai, and the Sangley was an indispensable presence in Spanish management of the Philippines. …
