One of the four families of Okueshi (court painters). In 1617, Kano Tan'yū was appointed as a court painter by the Edo Shogunate and was bestowed with a residence outside the Kajibashi Gate of Edo Castle. Tanshin gave his younger brother Tansetsu a fief of 100 koku, which lowered the family's status within the Kano school.
