Since the end of the Meiji period, research on green turtles and artificial release of hatched turtles have been conducted in Ogasawara, and in 1972 the Ogasawara Fisheries Center was established on Chichijima Island, where full-scale conservation and propagation efforts are being attempted. A closely related species is the Australian green turtle C. depressa , which has a flat shell.
