...When the angle of attack of a wing becomes large, the air first hits the underside of the wing slightly behind the leading edge, then flows around the leading edge to the upper surface of the wing, losing momentum and becoming more likely to separate, causing a stall. To prevent this, the leading edge of the wing is extended forward to create a gap, allowing the air that hits the underside to flow directly to the upper surface of the wing, preventing separation.
