bilād al-sūdān (English spelling) biladalsudan

bilād al-sūdān (English spelling) biladalsudan

The savannah belt stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea, centered on the 15° north latitude, stretches from the central part of Africa to the north and south, with a maximum width of 250 km. The name comes from the fact that medieval Muslims called it bilād al-sūdān (Countries of the Blacks). Trade routes connecting the Mediterranean coast and Sudan have been open since prehistoric times, but it was the western part of Sudan that brought about the Islamization of the Sudanese people the earliest, when the Almoravid dynasty destroyed the Kingdom of Ghana in 1076-77, marking the beginning of the Islamization of Western Sudan.
