In the early Meiji period in Yokohama, a group of young people became Protestant Christians under the guidance and influence of American missionaries such as Hepburn, Brown, and Barra. Based at Brown School, they established the first Protestant church in Japan, the Japan Christian Association, in 1872 (Meiji 5), and Tokyo Unity Theological Seminary in 1877, and played a leading role in the subsequent development of Christianity. Their leaders included Masayoshi Oshikawa, Yoitsu Honda, Kajinosuke Ibuka, and Masahisa Uemura. While the Kumamoto Band was nationalistic and the Sapporo Band was individualistic, the group was said to be church-oriented. They actively promoted the formation of churches and theology from Presbyterian and Reformed positions, as well as Christian education, and formed the core of Protestant Christianity in Japan.
