A seaweed of the Phaeophyceae family, with a shape reminiscent of bamboo leaves, found along the Pacific coast south of the Kanto region and the Sea of Japan coast (illustration). It grows in colonies on rocks in the upper intertidal zone from winter to spring, and its body reaches a length of 10-25 cm and a width of 2-3 cm. It is harvested in winter for food. It is preserved by slicing it into dried seaweed like Asakusa-nori, and then grilling it or rehydrating it in water and dressing it with vinegar. It is distinguished from the similar seaweed, Petalonia fascia (OF Müll.) O.Kuntz., by its slightly narrower body width of 1.5-2.5 cm and by its lack of the root-like cellular filaments seen in Habanori in the pith, while Habamodoki Punctaria latifolia Grev. is distinguished by its wider body width of 3-7 cm and by its four-layered body. O.Kuntz.
