Ulrich Anton Ulrich's (1633-1714) Aramena (1669-73), which was widely admired and praised by Leibniz, is a five-volume work of about 3,900 pages. At the other end of the spectrum, the representative villain novel is Grimmelshausen's The Adventures of Simplicissimus (1669), which is today considered a masterpiece of world literature, but it was not considered literature in its time and its true value was not recognized until the end of the century. …
