The United States purchased territory from Mexico. The Gadsden Treaty was signed on October 30, 1853, and ratified on April 25, 1854. At the time, the United States was looking to build a transcontinental railroad in the South, and the area around the Mexican Mesilla Valley was attracting attention as a good route. J. Gadsden, who wanted to build a railroad, was appointed minister to Mexico, and after negotiating with the Mexican government, he succeeded in purchasing an area of about 78,000 km2 for $10 million. This established the current territory of the continental United States, and established a foothold for expansion into the Pacific and Central America.
