The United States purchased territory from Mexico. The Gadsden Treaty was signed on October 30, 1853, and ratified on April 25, 1854. At the time, the United States was looking to build a transcontinental railroad in the South, and the area around the Mexican Mesilla Valley was attracting attention as a good route. J. Gadsden, who wanted to build a railroad, was appointed minister to Mexico, and after negotiating with the Mexican government, he succeeded in purchasing an area of about 78,000 ^km2 for $10 million. This established the current territory of the continental United States, and established a foothold for expansion into the Pacific and Central America.

アメリカのメキシコからの領土購入。 1853年 10月 30日ガズデン条約調印，54年4月 25日条約批准で決定された。当時アメリカでは南部の大陸横断鉄道建設のため，メキシコ領メシラ渓谷付近の地域が，良好な通路として注目されていた。そのため鉄道建設を希望していた J.ガズデンがメキシコ駐在公使に任命され，メキシコ政府と交渉の結果約7万 8000km²の地域を 1000万ドルで購入することに成功。これにより現在のアメリカ合衆国本土の領土が確定し，太平洋，中央アメリカ進出の足掛りを築いた。
