An ethnic group living in the highlands of southwestern Kenya. Their language belongs to the Kalenjin group of the Nairo-Hamitic language family. They make their living from cattle rearing, but also cultivate finger millet and corn. They have no centralized unifying mechanism, but traditional social organization consists of 17 exogamous patrilineal clans, the most important of which is the complex of age-graded and age-grouped systems known as the "Nandi system." Society has traditionally been egalitarian, but religious authority is exercised by clans of prophetic priests of Maasai origin.
