Yakabi Chouki

Yakabi Chouki
Year of death: 1775.2.17 (18 January 24)
Year of birth: Naoki 4.1.19 (1716.2.11)
He was an 18th century Okinawan classical music performer and the founder of this school. His name was Karana Kozenmo. He was the fourth son of Tamagawa Anji Tomoo. His talent for performing arts was recognized at a young age, and he went to Satsuma (Kagoshima Prefecture) to study Noh and Shimai. After returning to Japan, he was appointed to a government position, but he soon became blind due to an eye disease, and his career was abandoned. He then learned the Uta Sanshin (Shamisen) from Terukina Monkaku, which he inherited and developed, perfecting his own unique style of music, which was later called "This School." He also left behind a musical score called "Yakabi Kokoshi," which was a compilation of 117 songs that were compiled by organizing and compiling the fragmentary sanshin music scores at the time. It has become the standard for Okinawan music in later generations, and is also the oldest surviving Okinawan music score. It can be said that the basic content of Okinawan classical music was established in Yakabi, but it should not be overlooked that Yakabi's knowledge of Yamato performing arts was behind this. <References> Masaharu Ikemiya, "Portraits of Early Modern Okinawa"
