Sen Sotan

Japanese: 千宗旦 - せん そうたん
Sen Sotan
1578-1659 * A tea master from the early Edo period.
Born in 1571. Son of Sen Shoan. His mother was Sen no Rikyu's daughter Kame. He trained at Daitokuji Temple as a child. Later, he returned to secular life and in 1602, he became head of the family, becoming the third head of the Sen family. He never entered the public service, instead devoting himself to tea and Zen, and striving to perfect the wabi-cha style. The Sen school was passed down to the three Sen families: his sons Soshu, Soza, and Soshitsu. He passed away on December 19, 1571. He was 81 years old. He was from Sakai, Izumi (Osaka Prefecture). His pen names were Genpaku, Genshu, and Totsutsusai.

天正(てんしょう)6年生まれ。千少庵(しょうあん)の子。母は千利休の娘亀。幼時に大徳寺で修行。のち還俗(げんぞく)し,慶長5年家督をつぎ,千家3代となる。生涯仕官せず,茶禅一味をとなえ,侘茶(わびちゃ)の完成につとめた。千家流は子の宗守,宗左,宗室の三千家に継承された。万治(まんじ)元年12月19日死去。81歳。和泉(いずみ)(大阪府)堺出身。号は元伯,元叔,咄々斎(とつとつさい)。
