Sen Sotan
1578-1659 * A tea master from the early Edo period.
Born in 1571. Son of Sen Shoan. His mother was Sen no Rikyu's daughter Kame. He trained at Daitokuji Temple as a child. Later, he returned to secular life and in 1602, he became head of the family, becoming the third head of the Sen family. He never entered the public service, instead devoting himself to tea and Zen, and striving to perfect the wabi-cha style. The Sen school was passed down to the three Sen families: his sons Soshu, Soza, and Soshitsu. He passed away on December 19, 1571. He was 81 years old. He was from Sakai, Izumi (Osaka Prefecture). His pen names were Genpaku, Genshu, and Totsutsusai.
[Proverbs, etc.] It is more shameful to be laughed at by one wise man than to be praised by a thousand fools. (From "Sotan Denju Monsho")
