Yagara (arrow shaft) - cornet‐fish

Japanese: ヤガラ(矢柄) - ヤガラ(英語表記)cornet‐fish
Yagara (arrow shaft) - cornet‐fish
A general term for marine fishes of the Fistulariidae family in the order Syngnathidae. In Japan, two species are known: the red Fistularia petimba (illustration) and the blue Fistularia villosa . Both have a very long, rod-like body with an almost identical dorsal and anal fin positioned opposite each other at the rear, hence the name "arrow shaft." The body is flattened vertically, with a tubular snout that opens at the tip and two soft rays extending from the center of the caudal fin. It reaches a body length of 1.5m. It is found in coastal waters from central Honshu southward through the tropical Indian and Pacific Oceans.
