A rebellion by the Chichimeca people that took place in New Galicia (now northwest of Mexico City) from 1541 to 1542. New Galicia was conquered by Nuño de Guzmán and then Diego Hernández de Proaño, and was the site of some of the most brutal and ruthless invasions of the Indies. As a result, the Chichimeca people, who continued to be mistreated even after the conquest, developed strong anti-Spanish sentiment. The rebellion was triggered by the fact that the defenses of New Galicia were weakened when Vásquez de Coronado, who was on an expedition to the southwestern United States in search of the Seven Cities of Cibola at the request of Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza, conscripted many Spaniards from New Galicia.
