A deciduous tree of the Rosaceae family similar to the bead tree. The trunk grows to about 10m in height, and the young branches and leaves are covered with soft hairs. In spring, the flowers bloom in a cluster of several flowers on the short branches, with five petals, red buds that turn white when they bloom, and a hairy peduncle about 3.5-5cm in diameter, almost the same length as the flower. The fruit is spherical, 2-2.5cm in diameter as its name suggests, and does not have a concave tip like an apple. It is also called the dog apple. Native to mainland China, it is used for bonsai in Japan, but because it is highly cold-resistant, it was used as a breeding parent for developing cold-resistant apple varieties in Siberia.
