Japanese: サトウダニ - さとうだに

A mite of the family Saccharomyces, which is distributed widely throughout the world. In Europe and the United States, it is found in dried fruits and dairy products, while in Japan, it is often found in crude sugar and miso. It was given its Japanese name after it became a problem when it infested imported sugar after World War II. Its body length is about 0.4 mm. Its body is milky white, with slightly brown legs and jaws. The left and right basal segments of the second leg are connected to form a W shape, and the basal segments of the first leg are also connected in a Y shape, and this characteristic alone makes it easy to distinguish it from other species. However, the basal segments of juvenile and immature mites do not connect.

世界に広く分布するサトウダニ科のダニ。欧米では乾燥果実や乳製品などに見られ，日本では粗製の砂糖やみそに多く見いだされる。第2次世界大戦後に輸入された砂糖に大発生して問題となり，この和名がつけられた。体長0.4mm内外。体は乳白色で，脚と顎体部がわずかに茶色。第2脚の基節条は左右が連結してW字形を呈し，第1脚の基節条もY字形で連なり，この特徴だけでも他種と容易に鑑別できる。しかし，幼ダニと若ダニでは基節条の連結がない。
