He was the illegitimate son of King Charles II of England. He was born in Rotterdam, Holland, while his father was in exile, and returned to England after the Restoration and became a duke. He competed for the throne with his uncle, the Duke of York (later James II), and because he was a Protestant, he was supported by the anti-York faction and often participated in conspiracies, which led to him being banished from the country. When James II ascended to the throne, he led a small force and landed at Lyme Regis, but although he gained the support of the people, he was defeated at the Battle of Sedgemoor and executed in London.
