Mompou

Spanish composer and pianist. Also known as Mompou. His mother is French. After studying at the Liceo Conservatory in his hometown of Barcelona, he studied piano and composition in Paris from 1911 to 1914. From 1921 to the 1930s, he was mostly active in Paris, where he had connections with Poulenc and others. From 1941, he settled in his hometown of Barcelona. He is known for his lyrical piano pieces such as Intimate Impressions (1911-1914), the Song and Dance series (1921-1972), and Concealed Music (1959-1967). His music, which he himself called the "primitive style," draws on the innovative harmonic sense of Debussy and others, but also has something in common with the experimental spirit of Satie. Other works include Improperia (1963) for soloist, chorus and orchestra, guitar pieces, and songs. He formed a deep friendship with the famous piano player A. de Larrocha (1923-2009), who was from the same hometown.
