A city in the western part of Gangwon Province, South Korea. It is the provincial capital of Gangwon Province. It has an area of 1,116.38 square kilometers and a population of 252,177 (2000). It was promoted to a city in 1949. It was merged with Chuncheon County in 1995. It is located in the center of the Chuncheon Basin, which is formed by the Bukhan River, Soyang River, and Gongjicheon River. It is known as a lakeside city due to the many dams in the surrounding area. The Chuncheon Industrial Complex, which mainly produces textile products, has been developed in Hopyeong-dong. It is also an important military city. It is home to Kangwon National University, Hallym University, and Chuncheon University of Education. It is the terminus of the Gyeongchun Line.
