Man and Superman

A four-act comedy by the British playwright Bernard Shaw. It was produced in 1903. John Tanner, a free thinker who toyed with revolutionary theories, argues that love and marriage are when a woman seeks a man as her prey, and that behind this lies the "life force" of the will of the universe. He thinks that the beautiful Anne is after his friend, a poet, but when he hears that it is actually him, he is shocked and runs away to the mountains of Spain. However, he is eventually captured and forced to marry. It is a long play that develops Shaw's philosophy, including a discussion of "Don Juan in Hell" in the third act, but it is not just a philosophical play; it is an excellent comedy that vividly depicts reality with superb dialogue and distinguishes between the customs of the British, Irish, and Americans.

イギリスの劇作家バーナード・ショーの四幕喜劇。1903年作。自由思想家で革命的な理論を弄(ろう)するジョン・タナーは、恋愛、結婚とは、女が男という獲物をねらうので、その背後には、宇宙の意志の「生命力」が働いているのだと述べたてるが、美女アンがねらっているのは彼の友人の詩人と思いきや、彼自身と聞かされ、驚いてスペインの山中まで逃げ出す。しかしついには捕まって結婚させられてしまう。第三幕「地獄のドン・ファン」の討論を含み、ショーの哲学を展開する長い劇だが、単なる思想劇でなく、みごとな台詞(せりふ)で現実を活写し、イギリス人、アイルランド人、アメリカ人の風俗の特色が書き分けられた優れた喜劇である。
