Kotosh (English spelling)

Kotosh (English spelling)

This ruin is located on the right bank of the Higueras River, upstream of the Huayaga River, in the northern highlands of Peru. It is located about 1 km west of Huánuco City, at an altitude of about 2000 meters. It has been excavated three times since 1960 by an academic research team from the University of Tokyo. The period corresponding to the oldest non-pottery layer is called the Mito period, and the Temple of the Crossed Hands and the Temple of the Small Niche, which are among the oldest temples in the central Andes, belong to this period. It is said to date to around 2000 BC, followed by the Huayrahirca period, which has distinctive tropical forest culture-type pottery. It then passed through the Kotosh period, then the Chavin period, and then the Saharapata and Higueras periods, but cultural development stagnated after the Christian era. Currently, the non-pottery temple is preserved, but it has fallen into disrepair due to poor management.
