Hasegawa Shin wrote this play for Shin Kokugeki, which was in a crisis following the sudden death of its head, Sawada Shojiro, in 1929 (Showa 4). It premiered at the Imperial Theater in August and was well received. The main character, Seki no Yataro, was later played by Shimada Shogo. The storyteller Hattori Shin (1880-1974, whose name was also given to him by Hasegawa), who was an ardent admirer of Hasegawa Shin, took over the play and turned it into a kodan (traditional Japanese story), making it his specialty. It was also adapted into a rokyoku (traditional Japanese folk song) and performed by Kasugai Okame (retired in 1957), known as the genius young rokyoku performer, because the typical subject matter of the Matatabimono (traveling woman lover) was suited to these art forms.
