Sof'ya Alekseevna

Sof'ya Alekseevna
1657‐1704
Daughter of Alexei Mikhailovich, the second Tsar of the Romanov dynasty of Russia. Dissatisfied with the accession of her infant half-brother Peter I (1682) to the throne after her elder brother Fyodor III, she established her younger brother Ivan (V) alongside Peter in a palace revolution and ruled in the name of the two Tsars. However, in 1689 she was defeated by Peter's supporters and confined to the Novozhevichiy Monastery. In 1698, there was a movement to support her, so she was made a nun and spent the rest of her life there. She was a sort of enemy of Peter I, and is often seen only in that light, but she was highly educated for a Russian woman of her time, and with the help of her favorite, Prince Vasilii V. Golitsyn (1643-1714), who was also one of the most cultured people of the time, she worked hard to reform the country and strengthen relations with the Western countries.
