… In the second half of this century, with the development of computers, numerical solutions to the three-body problem began to be researched. Because the celestial bodies were regarded as point masses, reliable numerical solutions could not be obtained when two celestial bodies approached each other, but in 1967, V. Szevehely and C.F. Peters, then at Yale University, showed that this difficulty could be eliminated by applying a regularization called the Kusternheimo-Stiefel transformation to the equations of motion.
