Queen of Denmark and Norway (reigned 1387-1397). Princess of Denmark, she married the future King Haakon VI of Norway. After the death of her father and husband, she became regent for both countries and queen in 1387. In 1389, she defeated Sweden and became the de facto ruler of the three countries. In 1397, she formed the Kalmar Union, realizing a personal union of the three Nordic countries, making her sister's grandson Eric king, and seizing real power as regent, earning her the nickname "Semiramis of the North."
