Niceto Alcalá Zamora

1877‐1949
Spanish politician. He studied law at the universities of Granada and Madrid. He joined the State Department in 1899 and was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1905. After serving as Minister of Industry and Minister of the Armed Forces, he opposed the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera and became a leader of the republican conservative liberal faction, advocating anti-monarchy. He served as President of the Republic from December 1931 to April 1936. He was a leader of the moderate party. He left the country before the outbreak of the civil war in July, and fled from Paris to Buenos Aires, where he died in February 1949. [Watanabe Tetsuro]
